1828年赫尔辛基大学和图书馆以“芬兰帝国亚历山大大学”名义迁移到赫尔辛基，暂时安置在一所临时性房屋中，1832年教学大楼竣工，1845年图书馆新楼在大学楼北面落成。评议会有6000卷藏书捐给了大学，成为大学图书馆的基础。赫尔辛基大学图书馆—芬兰国家图书馆的馆舍面积29，000平方米。截止到2002年12月31日，赫尔辛基大学图书馆270万卷图书与期刊（现刊13000种）。
