氮素是植物生长发育所需的大量营养元素,也是作物产量的主要限制因素之一。尽管氮元素在大气中含量丰富,但是不能直接被植物吸收利用,而豆科植物可以通过与根瘤菌共生将氮气转化为植物可直接利用的含氮化合物。根瘤作为共生固氮的场所,为根瘤菌提供固氮的微环境和能量。因此,根瘤器官的发育调控机制是共生固氮研究中最重要的科学问题之一。
