北京外国语大学亚非语系创建于1961年。目前共开设12个外语专业：越南语、老挝语、柬埔寨语、缅甸语、泰语、马来语、印尼语、僧加罗语、韩语、土耳其语、斯瓦希里语、豪萨语，是全国外语院校中开设外语专业最多、历史最悠久的院系之一。2001年，经教育部批准在亚非语系建立了国家外语非通用语本科人才培养基地，并纳入“新世纪高等教育改革工程”。亚非语系12个专业现有本科、硕士研究生两个培养层次。
