《摩诃婆罗多》和《罗摩衍那》并称为印度两大史诗。中国早在5世纪初就已知道它们。鸠摩罗什(344—413)译《大庄严论经》卷五曰:“时聚落中多诸婆罗门,有亲近者为聚落主说《罗摩延书》,又《婆罗他书》,说阵战死者,命终生天。”但这两大史诗属于印度婆罗门教文化系统,也就没有进入中国历代佛教高僧的译经范围,其翻译任务就此延宕了一千多年。

关于地山先生与印度的因缘,笔者此前撰写过一篇论文《许地山的学术成就与印度文化的联系》[①]。其中重点谈了地山先生与佛教和印度文学的关系,也谈到地山先生对印度文学的译介。然而意犹未尽。
